2012 Tikkun Olam Committee Statement on Gaza Cease-fire
The tikkun olam committee, on behalf of OHALAH, praises the efforts and actions of all those who facilitated and agreed to the cease fire that was reached to suspend the hostilities between Israel and Hamas. Our deepest prayer is that the cease fire holds and that the same spirit that recognized the futility of war can lead to a sustained peace in the region. We recognize that that the state of Israel has a moral obligation to protect its citizens from the thousands of rockets fired from the Hamas-controlled Gaza strip, and we are grateful that a ground invasion was avoided. We have an abiding concern for the State of Israel and her citizens and we pray for protection and safety of our brothers and sisters who live in the Land, as well as for the safety of all people living in the region. We mourn the loss of both Israeli and Palestinian lives in the recent fighting and in the long-standing conflict. We pray for the people who are injured physically and mentally by weapons of war. Let us honor those who have died not with more death, but with life and efforts to resolve this conflict. We continue to believe that only a two state solution protecting the security interests of Israel and the right to autonomy of the Palestinian people can ultimately resolve this conflict.
